Extra inspired – Interview with Kevin Renshaw

Kevin Renshaw is a singer-songwriter who’s been playing the guitar since he was 12. Currently he’s been slowly and steadily mastering the art of digital production with modern day DAWs and he found that these technologies boosted his creativity. He’s his short but exciting story about writing the right tune, collaborating with the musicians in our community and the first Drooble Xmas song.

Hello! Tell the world about yourself. How did you grow up to become the musician you are today?

I started playing the guitar at age 12. I bought my first guitar with birthday money.

Introduce your current musical projects and tell us what makes each one special for you!

After bringing my wide taste in songwriting styles & genres, I replied to a request to get involved with a Drooble collaboration band. And now we have many songs that we have written together. In fact we are due to release the first Drooble Xmas song which also has a video (produced by me). I’m also working on the odd song on my own .

You have been playing music for a long while! How do you find the drive and inspiration to keep going all this time?

I have been learning to record music with a DAW and have been extra inspired. My songwriting ability has suddenly put a spurt on with ten new song written over the last 12 months. Having a place like Drooble to put out songs is also encouraging.

How is your local music scene in your perspective? Do you feel like you belong there?

I do not play in the usual places, instead I play in shopping malls, churches, youth events etc.

What is your all-time favorite record and how did it change you as an artist?

I do not have one favorite record but I was definitely inspired by UK bands and artists like Queen, David Bowie, T.Rex.

What are your favorite software and hardware tools for music production?

I have found that Reaper covers all I need in a DAW. I have recently upgraded my headphones, and guitar pickups. And will be getting a new multi fx pedal for Christmas.

What is your songwriting process like?

Most often I write the basic tune on the guitar. Then I find the drum pattern to match it and then I lay down the drums and rhythm guitars. Once I have the structure recorded. I add bass, synthesizers, strings and whatever fits the tune. Whilst this is being developed I sing along with a scrap of an idea of words and listen to a demo version whilst developing the lyrics. Then record a basic guide vocal track, if it works and all fits I build it. With harmonies in the chorus etc.

Out of all the live shows you played, which one was the most memorable, and why?

Playing on Plymouth Hoe several times, with the lighthouse as a natural backdrop. With the sun shining and a LOT OF PEOPLE attending. It just can’t get any better.

What is your biggest musical goal?

I think I just want to progress in songwriting and recording and that’s what I’m currently doing.

How has being on Drooble helped you as a musician?

It’s given me a place to share my music, to collaborate online with people from all over the world and is also a great place to discuss, post and talk with fellow musicians.
