Clicking with “8 Clicks” may take more than a single listen as 2Thoughts’ style is a bit of an acquired taste

Bobby Clayton is a guitar player and singer from Gillingham with an interesting musical style and distinctly British voice. He is at the heart of 2Thoughts, a band that also features Dean Judd on bass guitar and backing vocalist Stuart Tompsett. At the core of 8 Clicks, their second record, is the acoustic-singing sound of the typical singer-songwriter. But Bobby and crew go above and beyond that by making each song special. The 10 songs stand entirely on their own with the compelling use of atmosphere and unexpected instrumentation making for a dense and immensely rich sound.

You’ll hear the boys do tribal drum beatings, vocal hums and oohs, electronic percussion, and plenty more in addition to some skillful, inspired songwriting bolstered with poetic lyricism. It all comes together elegantly, never sounding like jarring experimentation or over-confident spontaneity. The production on 8 Clicks is well thought-out and impeccable.

While we do have some wonderful things to say about the album, clicking with 8 Clicks may take more than a single listen as 2Thoughts’ style is a bit of an acquired taste – the mark of highly individualistic musicians. But anyone who loves music for being what it is – one of humanity’s greatest mediums for self-expression – should check it out, for it’s a cunning record with definite hit potential. If we don’t hear Bobby & co’s music in the credits of a TV series sometime soon, we’ll lose all belief in scoring forever!
