Band Interview: Paperwhite, Magical Dream-Pop from Brooklyn

Paperwhite Band

Paperwhite, brother sister Katie and Ben Marshall are a Dream-Pop duo from Brooklyn, NY. Katie is the singer and songwriter of the band. Her sophisticated melodies bounce from star to star in a lush galaxy of synthesized textures. Ben, also the drummer for Brooklyn band Savoir Adore, is the producer and co-writer. With four singles to date, and a debut EP “Magic” they’ve had nothing but enormous love from the blogosphere. Receiving the Hypem title “Most Blogged Artist” twice in a row, Paperwhite is a band worth keeping an eye on!

The best thing a young musician can do is be true to themselves. You always want to push your craft and aesthetic but at the end of the day if you’re writing or playing music that you love then you’re doing something right.

Hi, Katie, it’s so nice to have you here on Drooble Talks! Please tell us a bit about yourself and your influences!

Music has played a crucial role in our lives. Ben, myself and our older brother Sam have been playing instruments and singing since a young age. We all continued our musical pursuits and graduated from Berklee College of Music. It wasn’t until 2013 that Ben and I began writing what we would now consider the first Paperwhite songs. We found that we were really inspired by a mixture of organic and electronic. Our focus has been to find balance within contrast, whether it’s a song that is heartfelt but danceable or using electronic beats under a classic songwriting format.

What message do you want to send with your music?

We’ve all had moments where music has truly moved us. Our main goal is to touch people with our music and make people feel the way we’ve felt listening to some of our favorite songs. The response we’ve had in the past year and a half has been incredible. We’re beyond grateful to be able to reach and speak to people from around the world. There have been a few fans that have reached out to us to share how our music has impacted their lives. These stories have touched us deeply and inspire us to continue writing. We want to share experiences, emotions and moments with our listeners. While we are a new band and our following is still small, our listeners are incredible. They motivate us to push through and continue on.

What do you think of Drooble?

One of the reasons we love living in New York is because of the sense of community between musicians and creative people. We absolutely can and should join forces to create something magical! The fact that Drooble is connecting musicians is a very powerful thing. Amazing things happen when people join forces!

What would you tell a musician in his early days?

The best thing a young musician can do is be true to themselves. You always want to push your craft and aesthetic but at the end of the day if you’re writing or playing music that you love than you’re doing something right. It’s always good to follow up on trends and stay current but when music is genuine it shines through.

How do you manage to push your band and presence?

As a new band we struggle with doing everything on our own. A big goal of ours in 2016 is to continue expanding our team. Like we said earlier, when you bring people together, big things happen. We believe the industry is evolving. It’s very difficult to feel financially stable as a musician but figuring out a strategy with releases can help to ease some of that stress. We’re always brainstorming ways to help push the industry forward so that all of the passionate and talented musicians making next to nothing will have their voices heard.

How do you see the future of music collaborations?

The internet brings so much opportunity to musicians. Having the ability to connect with people all around the world instantly is so unique to this generation. While there is something special about working with someone face to face, we should absolutely take advantage of the ability to reach people. Streaming, connecting and sharing is the way of the future.

In conclusion, what’s next for you?

Over the past year, we have been writing like crazy. Throughout 2016 we promise we will be sharing a lot of new music. We are constantly exploring and developing the Paperwhite world and we can’t wait to share our journey with our listeners!!

Thank you so much for the Talk and good luck to you, Katie and Ben! We’ll be keeping a close eye on your progress as we enjoy your music daily!
