What’s the weirdest thing you’ve heard lately?

Why create a website for thousands of musicians from all over the world, if not to ask them weird questions and post their answers on your blog? What’s some weird stuff you’ve listened to lately? That’s what we asked our users and they happily provided us with some blog material. We give you some of the more interesting ones.

“This one 🙂 A crazy sound full psychedelic! I love psychedelic rock and discovered Victoria + Jean last year live. first with the famous song “Why won’t you”.. The duo + drummer is incredibly good live! A real guitarist, completely “rock and roll” in the live sound. And the sexy Victoria that sings like she’s possessed by a démon 🙂 Really really good stuff to discover!”

“What make me go to the concert.. :)”

“This is certainly a recent discovery of ‘strange’”

Yes, Jason. This is pretty messed up, thank you for your generous contribution. We’re already glad we did this.

“There is a lot of strange music I can talk about but then we’ll be busy till next week, I guess 🙂
There is a jazzpiece from Ornette Coleman called “Free Jazz”. Weird f****** shit 🙂 ”

“Maybe Jeff Buckley – “So Real”? I like the progressions. Especially the chorus is BANG! The solo and outro are then a bit different but still OK. ”

“Round Midnight – Thelonious Monk. At first (if you’re not used to jazz) you will find this song pretty strange, because Monk plays in a VERY unique way, and he also uses notes what most musicians don’t…. But if you just close your eyes and listen to it, it will carry you away to a very beautiful place, and then you realize how perfect this song is.”

“cigarettes after sex, Frank Zappa and others”

Well, that was helpful. A bit. Maybe? Anyway, we chose one song from each of them – enjoy:

Since Leandro was not very specific on “others”, we chose this abomination:

“Hi!
I’m part of this community as well – Playing for change. This is it.”

Ooookay? We’ll take it – not because it’s weird, but because it’s a really weird choice for a “weird”song…

“The strangest start in bowie, frank zappa, yes, and go to the mars volta, bjork, moby or erykah badu. But i think all depend of how many love you put in your moments, when everything stop and you are there alone flying with yourself. Thanks for the question.”

Well, thanks for the answer. Let’s not go with Bowie and Zappa this time. Erykah Badu would not be our first “weird” pick either. Moby? Nope. Luckily, we’ll more than compensate in weirdness with the other two. In fact, Bjork is SO weird, we could have just named the whole article “Bjork”. Oh, well. Too late for that. And Mars Volta are just a great compliment.

“There are many rare and experimental music out there but little of it is rare and pleasant at the same time. Undoubtedly one of the best experiences I’ve had was in the festive Cervantion in 2012.

In Mexico each year Cervantion festival is celebrated for 44 years. The yield is the beautiful city of Guanajuato in the state that bears the same name. For those who do not know it, this festival is a multicultural festival that brings together artists from around the world and all the disciplines, art, dance, sculpture, singing, dancing, music, juggling, etc. The festival is in honor of the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote Don Quixote.

As if this were not enough all this is framed by the magic that surrounds the city of Guanajuato which is considered patrimonial of humanity by UNESCO. Guanajuato is a walled city, with cobblestone streets and tunnels that run underneath giving the city a unique atmosphere that transports you to another time, another era. The culture is lived and breathed in every corner of the place. Well there I have visiting the city with my girlfriend. We went to take a little vacation and to teach my girlfriend a Mexico that did not know. After several days of shows and fabulous events, from Chinese theater to Catalan avant-garde performance, an experience.

The last day, when we thought we could not see anything more that we be could surprised by, we learned that the last event was to be held in one of the tunnels of the city, so we were unaware that we were going to wait. We had to wait over an hour to get the access, everything was very busy but we approached each entry, the music was heard louder and sounded great. Finally we entered the tunnel and was happy there where I heard something I had not heard before. Yes, it was techno, but not the techno which I was used to, was something different, he had an edge of weirdness I could not describe, but I loved it, wanted to hear more of that. Well it was nothing more and nothing less than Alva Noto … Who ???

I never had heard of him but I already felt that I loved it. Well Carsten Nicolai as Alva Noto best known is an experimental multimedia musician, using technology to the limit, creating music and visuals in a very peculiar way. Everything is so cohesive that transports you immediately to a technological atmosphere out of this world. The music is composed by Alva Noto is made of click, glitches, noise and other sounds of a rare own conversation between calculators. I do not think there is a single musical note in any of his compositions, not in chromatic scale environment we know. Are just noise and shocks, but, in the hands of this artist sound fantastic. Undoubtedly one of the best audiovisual experiences I’ve had in my life.

Since then I follow his career closely, it is very interesting what he does.”

Well, we did NOT expect such a long answer, that’s for sure. Thanks, Miguel, now we have a backstory! But is it weird? Yes. Yes, it is. Here, take a look:

“QUEEN Bohemian Rap”
Erm, out of respect for the greatest band ever, we’ll just be quiet and leave this here.
P.S. We were really hoping for a Queen RAP.

What IS weird? If you think about it, a lot of songs you know well are actually pretty strange. Bohemian Rhapsody? Admit it, it is weird, you’re just used to it!
Anyway, this was your daily ration of weirdness. If you haven’t had enough, check out these:
