“ThunderHead” by Hyper Foofie is music for manic platforming and epic boss rushes

We don’t know what’s with Costa Rica, but there’s always so much great music from that corner of the world on Drooble. With that in mind, we approach ThunderHead by Jeffrey Fernández under the name Hyper Foofie. The first thing we see is an artwork with a silhouette of a man with thick clouds on the background. We brace ourselves and are ready to sink deep in what we think will be a dramatic and dead serious release.

We hit play on the Spotify link and opener “Ooh La La!” and a thick 808-ish beat kicks in. Tense synths don’t wait too long and as soon as their raw and nervous sound fills the spectrum we’re somehow starting to feel a bit comfortable with all that’s going on. The melodies start building up and boom, we get it! That’s some video game inspired jams! Next thing we hear is a super short quote from Castlevania’s legendary “Vampire Killer” and we know we are at home.

Hyper Foofie is obviously one of us old-school video game nerds. His music has learned a ton from the most banging 8 and 16-bit soundtracks of the 90s. Think Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi or Streets of Rage kind of jams. Only the production feels more modern, louder and clubbier. “ThunderHead” is just four tracks long but thankfully Hyper Foofie has a few other records out on the streaming platforms to keep you busy when you have already played his latest EP to death.

“ThunderHead” is definitely the most suitable boss rush music on Drooble. Don’t miss out!
