The new generation of Bulgarian metal – Interview with Born For Vengeance

Hailing from Ruse, a city located on the Northern Danube shores of Bulgaria, Born For Vengeance is not your typical metalcore band. Their music often incorporates elements from other genres like electronic music. What’s more, Born For Vengeance are determined not only to evolve and progress in their craft but to build a community for the new generations of bands and musicians that will allow them to feel more welcome in the Bulgarian metal scene.

Hello! Tell the world about yourself. How did you grow up to become the musician you are today?

Hi! We are Born For Vengeance – a modern metalcore band established in Ruse, Bulgaria since 2014 by our drummer (Dan) and vocalist (Dido). Our common interests, worldview and overall love for music brought us together and forged us as musicians. We don’t want to live an ordinary, boring life and be amongst the herd. We’d much rather find our place in the world of music.

Introduce your current musical projects and tell us what makes each one special for you!

We are currently working on our second EP which will be then followed by a third one. The idea behind these two EP’s is that they are going to be the sequels of our first one that came out this year (When the Curtain Falls…). What makes this project special for us is that we are connecting these three EP’s while experimenting with new sounds.

How do you find the drive and inspiration to keep making music?

We live in a country which is really cold towards musicians (in terms of shows, marketing, management, payment etc.) and we really want to change that. We would like to make a friendly place/scene for fans and musicians (just like us) where it is possible to earn money while making the music that we love. Also, the love and passion for this incredible thing called music keep us going every day. Without it our lives wouldn’t be as interesting.

How is your local music scene in your perspective? Do you feel like you belong there?

Our local music is honestly out of this world and with that being said it is also underrated. Well, there are bands that we can’t really get into their art, but it is because of our musical preferences. The people in the Bulgarian music scene are all so talented and passionate. We firmly believe that we have what it takes to be in this scene.

What is your all-time favorite record and how did it change you as an artist?

Our all-time favorite record is “Stand Up And Scream” by Asking Alexandria. It didn’t really change us as artists but helped us discover who we really are. Now we strive to become something big that will help the younger generation, just like this album did with us! We, as individuals, also like different variety of music. Yes, even non-metal music.

What are your favorite software and hardware tools for music production?

Usually, our drummer does all the music production and his favorite software in terms of DAW is Reaper, because of its simplicity. As for plugins the ones he most frequently uses are all of the WAVES and FabFilter bundles because again they are simple to use, they have quite the variety of options and they do the job perfectly. For hardware, we use Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as a recording interface and Digitech droptune pedal when we need to tune down our guitars instantly.

What is your songwriting process like?
Our inspiration comes in different shapes and forms. We spend most of our days together jamming or hanging out, so it is pretty natural for us to come up with an idea. There are times though where when we wake up and we don’t feel as creative as wish. What we do then is just take a little break. To be honest, the best ideas we’ve come up with are born from different events that occurred in our lives, especially when we least expected it. With that being said – it just comes naturally. We don’t really force our creativity.

Out of all the live shows you played, which one was the most memorable, and why?

The most memorable show for us was the Wacken Open Air Battle Of The Bands contest. It was a great show with lots of energy and emotion. The crowd was amazing, and we really felt the live experience. In addition to all of this, we managed to make an impression on the judges hosting the competition. We received a lot of positive feedback concerning our performance, as well as quality criticism, which helped us define our next goal as both individuals and as a band.

What is your biggest musical goal?

We don’t have a “biggest” musical goal. We want more than one thing. We have dreams and we will chase them. We want to make music that appeals to us and to fans. We want to build a community where it is possible for modern musicians to make a living out of their art. We hope to be viewed not only as a band, but as a family that welcomes everyone. We are no slaves to the underground so therefore we would love a big following. Not only for us but for every worthy Bulgarian musician/band.

How has being on Drooble helped you as a musician?

We received a good amount of feedback from people on this incredible platform! Our song “Lost Myself” managed to reach the ears of people that never listened to metal music and what’s crazy about that is that some of them liked it! We believe that this website has a huge chance of becoming a modern, innovative and much more functional MySpace of our era! We honestly have a lot of fun browsing here and there, possibly reviewing a song or two which makes the connection with people on this platform really stand out for itself! It is very practical, simple and amazing! We love it!
