Put your inner musician to the test: Personality, Rhythm and Musical Intelligence

Musical Intelligence

As I have previously stated – I love science. On the one hand, it gives us answers to mysterious questions like how does gravity work or why can’t penguins fly. It also allows us to learn more about ourselves and our own intricate inner worlds, because some scientist one day decided, “Hey, I should create a simple test that people can take to show their personality based on the music they are listening to?” Yes, that is exactly the kind of science I will introduce you to today – science that is so eerily accurate it must be magic. Also, we will throw in the mix some other music-related tests to further help you waste some precious time in learning more about your music personality, your inherent music-visual intelligence, whether you are tonedeaf or not and whether you have any basic understanding of music theory or have been faking it this entire time.

Before we jump into all this test fun, let’s explore the topic a bit more. Perhaps you might have come across the findings of Professor Adrian North, a researcher at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, who established that music tastes and personality are strongly linked. He came to this conclusion after conducting the largest study of its kind, involving 36 000 participants, who had to rate 104 different musical styles (What? That many? Who knew?) and then answer questions relating to their personality. That’s a lot of participants, so maybe the findings are pretty accurate? We’ll let you judge for yourselves. Here is what, according to the study, people who listen to different styles of music are like:

  • Blues is attractive to people with high self-esteem, who are creative and social. Blues fans are also gentle and calm.
  • Lovers of country and western tunes are really hard-working and outgoing.
  • Indie fans, on the other hand, have a low self-esteem, but at least they also appear to be creative. Just not gentle or hard-working. Ouch.
  • Rock and heavy metal fans also seem to suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of desire for hard work and being social. But at least they are gentle.

Music and personality

Let’s start this off with a quiz you don’t have to do much for, just to give you a taste of things to come. Spotify and the awesome TV show “Brain Games” got together to give us a deeper understanding of ourselves by analyzing our playlists. All you have to do is log into your Spotify account and select a playlist, then you wait, while watching a rather funny ad for the show “Brain Games” and voila – your personality is revealed. I go Energetic! What did you get? You can try it out here and share in the comments below.

If you don’t have Spotify or for some reason refuse to trust National Geographic and their TV programs, you can learn more about your personality based on your music preferences from the following test here.

It is called the Do-Re-Mi’s of Personality – an awesome name. I think if for nothing else, at least this test will allow you to seriously consider your music preferences, as it asks you to rate the extent to which you like listening to different music genres. Afterwards you fill out a quick personality test and demographic information and your result is immediately revealed to you.

The Dumb.com Music Visual Intelligence test was an awesome test, as it was a lot of fun to do. I felt like a detective who had to solve a very complicated crime. The test itself was created as a way to measure a person’s Associative Musical Visual Intelligence (AMVI). Its author, Jake Mandell, associates this type of intelligence to some extend with the condition synesthesia, where a person mixes several senses together, for example,he or she can see music in colours or feel sound at specific places in the body. However, he claims that many people use such aspects of synesthesia in their creative process and the test will tell us to what extent. Do share your results with us in the comments below so we can all compare

Don’t you think that www.dumb.com is a very weird site to find an intelligence test on, or perhaps is it the perfect site to find an intelligence test on?

Music ability

Now that we have established just how amazing your personality is based on the music you listen to, let’s find out if you are blessed with any musical talent at all. In this quick test you will find out exactly how tone deaf you are or are not and will thus prove your mother wrong … or right, once and for all. Are you ready? Go for it!

Here is a test to let you measure what your rhythm perception is, as well as to show you how difficult it is to memorize rhythms, as opposed to melodies. The site itself is filled with other interesting music tests you can take, so make sure you do and don’t forget to tell us your results in the comments below. We are eager to find out how you did.

I don’t know about you, but I had lots of fun finding out new aspects of myself with the help of music. With all this knowledge of human nature you have now, finding fellow musicians to collaborate with on Drooble will get even more interesting, enjoyable and worthwhile.
