Music World Records: The weird and the impressive

Guitar Weird Record

If you love to learn about world records then look no further – we got you covered with this list of some awesome human achievements.

Longest Music Video:

Before 2013 Michael Jackson’s 39-min 32-sec long video to the song “Ghost” held the record for longest music video. But then Pharell came along and introduced us to the 24-hour version of his hit single “Happy”. Why they thought that a 24-hour long video was a good idea, I am not sure. But it won them a Guinness World Record. Check the full video here, that is if you have nothing better to do: 24hoursofhappy.com

Longest theatrical run of a musical

The Fantasticks

I have always wondered how actors in musicals can get up on stage every day and perform the same songs for years on end. “The Fantasticks”, an off-Broadway musical by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, ran between 1960 and 2002 for a total of 17 162 performances, thus holding the record for longest theatrical run of a musical.

Most instruments used in a pieces of music

315. I didn’t even know there were that many instruments. In the performance the number of instruments go up to 370 once you include the duplicates and there is a bonus of 106 vocalists. The record is held by Rupam Sarmah and his team from India.

Best selling single of instrumental music

Yes, it is this song. I know – what the hell? But this 1977 disco version of the famous Star Wars theme is the only instrumental to have reached platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America with over 2 million copies sold. The album on which the song is featured, “Star Wars and other Galactic Funk”, managed to outsell the original movie soundtrack.

Largest human image of a musical instrument

Human Image Saxophone

Back in 2014 the French united on their National Music Day in the hopes of setting a new world record by constructing the largest human image of a saxophone. 1 660 people took part to complete the 56 meter long instrument. Pretty impressive and very jazzy.

Most music festival visited in 30 days

Now this is a record I challenge you to beat. Greg Parley from the UK managed to go to 26 different festivals around Europe in the span of 30 days in 2011. His feat is phenomenal, but I know you can do even better.

Most expensive musical instrument sold at auction

Stradivarius violin

No surprise here that the most expensive instrument is a violin, but perhaps the price it was sold for will curl your hair in shock (no foreseen effect for already curly hair) – $15,875,800. The ‘Lady Blunt’ Stradivarius violin was auctioned online in 2011 and the funds were given to the Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.

Largest attendance at a music festival, one location

Donauinsel Fest

3.3 million people came to the Danube Island Festival, held in Vienna, back in 2015. Perhaps the turnout was so good, because the festival is free and some big names hit the stage. The festival is held on a 6.5 km strip of land on the island of Donauinsel in Vienna. That must have been one insane party.

The oldest band

Do you want goal for where you want to be when you reach 80? The Golden Senior Trio from japan consists of three members with an average age of 83 and they have been hitting the stage since 2008.

The largest orchestra

I guess Australia loves to go big. In 2013 at the Queensland Music Festival 7 224 musicians played a medley of “Waltzing Matilda”, “Ode to Joy” and “We Will Rock You” to set the world record for largest orchestra. Their large-scale performance went on for 6 minutes and 8 seconds.

Loudest Drummer

Col Hatchman

Col Hatchman from Australia is named the world’s loudest drummer after he managed to get a reading of 137.2 dBA during a concert with his band Dirty Skanks in 2006. I couldn’t find a video of this moment, which perhaps is a good thing.

Most valuable guitar

Designer and Songwriter Mark Lui created a guitar worth $2,000,000 making it the most valuable in the world. The “Eden of Coronet” is a Gibson, covered in 11 441 pieces of diamonds and 18k white gold. It took 68 artists 700 hours to complete.

Fastest Guitar Player

After watching the video I have to admit that I am a bit scared and petrified at the hours of practice that this has probably involved. Nepali guitarist Nirvana Bista does appear to be doing the impossible by playing “Flight of the Bumblebee” at 1600 bpm, which we are used to enjoy at just 170 bpm.

Youngest Drummer

If you don’t feel very confident in your drum playing skills, here is a story about a tiny child who is better than you. You are welcome! Julian Pavone from the United States was 4 years 10 months and 15 days old when he rocked his 20th (no, that is not a typo) concert in 2009. It is perhaps a bit frightening that his first album, ‘Go Baby!’, was released when he was 20 months old. So how is that EP of yours going?
In the video he still has his pacifier on.

I hope you had fun exploring these music world records with us. We invite you to join other musicians at Drooble for some normal musical co-creating.
