It’s not a secret that Indonesia is an amazing country with an even more amazing music scene that offers everything from metal, indie, alternative to the most radical experimental electronics. We had the chance to talk to Dayat Suryana. A Jakarta-born guitarist who’s given his share of playing with bands before finally switching to writing music only for himself. Here’s what he had to say for the Drooble interview series.

Hello! Tell me about yourself. How do you grow to be your musician today?

My name: Dayat Suryana, I’m born in DKI Jakarta and raised in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia
In 1990 I started playing music and my first instrument was the guitar. From 1990 to 2003, I often played live shows, I participated in 3-4 groups and our music was from heavy metal to alternative, grunge and thrash metal. Between 1995-1996 I had a hardcore band. In 1997 I joined the Alternative Flow group and stuck with them until 2003. We made our tracks and did a demo recording. Not long ago the band broke up and I started writing songs only for myself. Around 2015 I started publishing my music online.

Introduce your current music projects and tell us what makes each one special for you!

I’m experimenting with various genres but always trying to remain true to the flow of metal. So far I’ve released several recordings – “Background” (2015), “Struggle” (2017) and in 2018 I was rather prolific and made two albums: “Atmosphere” and “Good or Bad”.

You have been playing music for a long time! How did you find the drive and inspiration to continue all this time?

I tried making music in different genres or often just played the guitar for fun. It turned out there was a song waiting for me to write it. There’s also often a message in my music. Like the song “Struggle”, which is reminding me to fight continuously, even though the results were not what I expected

How is your local music scene in your perspective? Do you feel like you are there?

I consider the local music scene good and yes, I do belong there.

What is your favorite record of all time and how has it changed you as an artist?

That would be Metallica, they’ve changed me as an artist.

What are your favorite software and hardware for music production?

My first software was Audacity and my first music device was an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar

What is your songwriting process like?

The process of writing a song starts from a message I’d like to pass on to the listener, I often use those as track titles. The process of playing music is simply something that makes life better.
