Music Apps: Singers, warm up those vocal chords

Music Apps

We live in exciting times thanks to technology. Our smartphones have the power to satisfy our every whim – find me a restaurant, tell me what I should watch tonight, help me find my true love, where can I order toilet paper from? Yes, perhaps we’ve become a tad spoiled. But who am I to stop progress? Instead, I prefer to indulge in it. Here are some of the best apps to satisfy this desperate plea to your smartphone: “Please, help me become a better singer”.

A sea of apps

As seems to be typical for the app world, there are hundreds of applications aimed at aspiring singers. All you have to do is just pick the one you click with the most. We will get you going on your search with a few suggestions:

The Art Of ScreamingThe Art Of Screaming is an app that teaches you to be the best singer you can be with vocal warm-ups and various strength exercises. Even though it appears to relate singing to screaming, fear not, they know what they are doing. Their app claims to be the best tool for all singers should they need to learn a proper screaming technique or how to hit the really high notes in a pop ballad without strain. Available only for the iOS (Apple dominance?) for the very charming price of $12.99, which is basically $13. Check out The Art of Screaming’s trailer video, which has famous musician’s thoughts on vocal warm up and voice preservation. Truly inspiring stuff:

SingTrueAnother app solely available to Apple worshipers – SingTrue. Its creators boldly state that it is the app “which can teach anybody to sing” by training their mind, ears and, of course, voice. I have to say that it is indeed a very interactive and fun app, especially as it makes you sing a note and then plays your horrible out of pitch sound back to you. Or at least that is what happened to me, but perhaps it was not the best idea to test a singing app 10 minutes after I woke up. The app guides you through various interactive lessons, which get progressively more difficult. The annoying part is that there are not that many exercises as of yet, hopefully, more will be added in future updates. SingTrue contains in-app purchases, but if you want to get full access, you need to part with $7.99.

Erol Singer's StudioMy research has highlighted that Erol Singer’s Studio is deemed the best app for singers to practice their technique, improve their pitch and become an overall better performer. It is great for beginners and experts and provides an abundance of exercises to keep you occupied and on your way to vocal perfection. Beginners can start off by determining their vocal range (yes, once again don’t do this at 7 in the morning, as it will make you lose self-confidence fast) and then build up and strengthen it through various pitch exercises, posture and breathing tips, instant feedback and on-screen visualisation of your vocal control. Very cool. The app contains 36 total exercises for all experience levels. Are they going to add more? I don’t know, but come on, get through these exercises first, you ambitious singer, you. Price: $14.99 and can be found on the App Store.

Vocal EaseVocal Ease is an excellent app for singers, available for Android phones. It was developed by Arnold McCuller, a renowned vocal trainer, who has worked with famous musicians, such as Phil Collins. The app contains vocal exercises, warm-ups and tips for performances. It is also more affordable, costing $1.99. Apple users, you are in luck, Vocal Ease is also available for iOS.

PrimaVistaPrima Vista Sight Singing is another great app for Android users. As you probably guessed, it works on improving your sight-singing abilities with the help of major, minor or chromatic practice sets, scale selection and others. It can be yours for $1.30 from the Play Store.

Vocalist LiteVocalist Lite is an app which allows you to learn how to sing through a game-like environment. In other words, you get points for correct answers, and can turn on the game mode which plays continuously with gradual increase in difficulty. For those non-game lovers (what is wrong with you?) you can practice your singing in the lessons sections. If you want to unlock all of the app’s features you will have to pay $1.99. Available in the App Store.

Matt FarmsworthCheck out Matt Farnsworth Vocal Studio if you are looking for an app that contains video lessons, demonstrations and exercises. Sometimes it is better to have a real person, albeit pre-recorded, explain stuff to you rather than a smartphone screen, but of course that depends on your own personal level of reclusiveness. The app asks you to fill out a few questions before beginning about why you are using the app, your background and experience and how you are feeling at the moment. The questionnaire helps to determine what are the best set of lessons for you today. This customization is not something that any of the other apps had, at least not to such an extent. Through in-app purchases, you can unlock the full content, but otherwise the app is free to download. Find it in the App Store.

Did you manage to become the greatest singer of all time with the help of one or all of the above-mentioned apps? Good for you. Show us what you got by connecting with other musicians on Drooble and sharing with us the amazing music you create. We can’t wait to hear it.
