Genre Fusion is Nicolas Silva’s Calling in My Own Atonement

Nicolas Silva likes to mix genres that seemingly have nothing at all to do with each other. But his way of doing things easily proves that music isn’t something defined by boundaries, but rather a language shared by everyone out there creating songs and melodies. It’s a wonderful thing that few dare explore and push to its limits.

But sticking comfortably to the framework of a single style definitely isn’t in Nicolas’s forte. Rather, he gets all his favorite genres together and assembles four very interesting instrumental pieces where metal guitars, rap beats, and electronica clash to form a three-headed musical beast. He called it “My Own Atonement”

Mr. Silva handles the complicated nature of his experimentation with competence, nimbly evading the many traps proposed by genre fusion – particularly, the one where all the style switching comes off as way too “on the nose” for anyone’s taste. The end result is fairly interesting, as it’s something we don’t get to hear especially often. However, it has to be noted where it’s due – Nicolas’ compositions still don’t sound quite like full-fledged songs taken to their ultimate end. Rather, they come off as a bunch of ideas in an advanced stage of realization.

Granted, that’s still a better turnout than having them sit unfinished on Nicolas’ hard-drive, but still – these four tunes make for a stepping stone towards a complete project, preferably one with vocals on the line as well. Calling them an album, though – a full-blooded body of work – would be quite the stretch.
Does that really matter, though? The talent and the potential are clearly there. All it will take for Nicolas from now is time and inspiration. Who knows, we could be listening to one of the bravest and most creative producers out there, and we don’t even know it!
